We are obsessed with beautiful things because they bring us outside of our humanness. We describe mountainscapes and sunsets over the horizon as ‘breathtaking,’ a word that literally implies the loss of a vital subconscious human function because, just for a moment, our attention is commanded away from the second guesses, the upcoming deadlines, the scene from earlier today when we said “you too” to the waiter who invited us to enjoy our meal.
Looi chases beauty through songs. For as much as she explores her role in this country as a biracial, queer daughter of a Chinese-Malaysian immigrant, she also interrogates the role of art and beauty in everyday life in an approach to her craft that is both philosophical and mischievous.
A singer, songwriter, guitarist, producer, and seasoned performer, Looi is currently based in New York and is working to release her debut EP — an intergenerational exploration of her Chinese-Malaysian heritage, which exists within the soundscapes of neo-soul, alt-indie, and r&b pop. Her cult following of listeners keeps up with her journey through enchanting performances of unreleased music, private demos, and select public releases.
